N.Z. sailor rejected
NZPA-AAP Adelaide A Melbourne-based New Zealand yachtsman, Gary Wiig, rejected as a competitor in the Australian Olympic trials in the single handed Finn class, will now seek a place in the New Zealand Olympic team. Wiig, who has. lived, worked and sailed in Melbourne for almost two years, sailed in two races of the Australian Olympic trials after being told he could, subject to Australian
citizenship qualifications being approved by this Friday. However, after a protest by an Australian Finn sailor against his eligibility to represent Australia and contest the trials in Adelaide, Wiig withdrew from the series. Wiig, a powerful sailor, was chosen as a member of the New Zealand yachting team in 1980 which, like the Australian team, withdrew from the Moscow Olympics.
