Lady El expected to go tonight

By

G. K. YULE

Lady El, the winner of five races in a comparatively brief track career, is entitled to be a firm favourite for the Spalding Sports Goods Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Addington Raceway this evening.

The daughter of El Patron has won mile races in 2min and Imin 58.4 s at her two most recent starts. This time she comes back to a standing start and will line up at No. 1 on 10m, not necessarily the best position for a mare not noted for speed out of the barrier. However, with a reasonable beginning, she should be too talented for most in this field.

Lady El is booked to travel to Auckland on Friday to compete at Alexandra Park the following day. Robin’s Star, Agrinion and Kanturk will accompany her north.

Freightman, on trial for the John Brandon Triple Crown Series at Addington next month, will create much interest. He is one of the brightest three-year-old prospects about and he should prove a match for his older rivals.

Delark, which has been a model of consistency slhce winning the Nelson Cup in January, is poised for another early success. She should be right in the thick of the finish.

Reggae appeals most of the others on the front,, while Winfield Kai and Richina should be the best of the remainder. Delark’s stablemate, Montrose, could hardly have been more impressive when she overcame a rocky run to win on the course on February 18 at her latest start. She looks the one to beat in the second leg, the «ing Cannon Metal Handicap. Mystery Point will be in demand after some fine efforts in his recent racing, while Lord Louie, another candidate for the John Brandon Series, is entitled to respect even though he failed to return a dividend from two starts last month. Lord Louie will tonight be driven by Jack Smolenski. Bogart Direct and Gay World must be considered in this type of race, while a big run from Chataway, a recent addition to Robin Butt’s team, will not be a complete surprise.
