Australia quiet
NZPA Sydney Industrial stocks finned but metal issues eased with the stronger Australian dollar, in quiet trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Brokers said the weakness of the United States dollar countered the benefits from rises in base and precious metal prices overseas. Brokers reported small overseas interest At 3 p.m., the all-ordinaries index was up 0.3 points at 735.4, with the all industrials up 2.8 points at 969.0, but the all resources was down 1.6 points at 550.2. Gold and base metal stocks opened strongly but then eased. GMK closed 20c up at 1150, while Emperor, at 415, was 5c up, but Central Norseman at 680 and Peko at 560 fell 10c.
BHP was steady at 1320, CSR lost 2c to 370, CRA fell. 8c to 532 and MIM lost 3c to 342, while Renlson rose 10c to 350.
Coals firmed, with Coal and Allied at 290 and Howard Smith at 395, both up 10c.
