Crown loss

Crown Forest Industries, Ltd, of Vancouver, has had its second consecutive annual loss — sCanl7.2 million — for the period to December 31. The result did, however, make an improvement on the previous loss of $23.3 million. Sales for last year increased to $Can727.3 million, from $654.7 million in 1982.

The company’s chairman, Mr Tom Rust, said weak markets for wood producers continued to be the main factor in Crown Forests poor result. It had earlier appeared a return to profitability would be achieved this year, “however, the labour related shutdown of our pulp and paper operation at Elk Falls, and the related secondary picketing of other operations, already seems to have clouded the picture.”
