N.Z. boxers win six bouts
Kevin Barry, the Canterbury and New Zealand light heavyweight boxing champion, was the most impressive competitor at an international tournament at Invercargill on Monday night.
One of six New Zealand representatives who used the contests as preparation for the Oceania tournament in Taiwan later this month, Barry stopped his Fijian opponent, Penaia Duaibe, in the first round.
A left hook from Barry forced Duaibe to concede a mandatory eight count, and the referee called a halt soon afterwards when Barry again staggered the Fijian with a right-hand punch.
The members of the Oceania team, Johnny Wallace, Chris Scoles, Michael "Sykes, Darren Nicol and
Russell Newton, all gained points decisions in their matches with Fijian representatives.
Sykes had to overcome the handicap of a firstround knock-down to beat Tomasi Bukaliei. The Fijian suffered a head cut in the third round, and Sykes was awarded the fight on a majority decision when the points were compiled. The New Zealand trainer, Kevin Barry, said afterwards that he was very satisfied with the form and fitness shown by the boxers who will be travelling to Taiwan.
Two other invitation bouts were held, and Isoa Baletrio gained some compensation for Fiji by outpointing Ben Ah Chong, of Southland.
