Sanders has endurance

Brian Sanders, a 30-year-old research worker with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Wellington, won the inaugural North West Nelson Forest Park endurance event last Saturday. A fast time over the fell running section by Sanders enabled him to hold off the faster-finishing David Dennis (Christchurch) and win in 6hr 17min 445. John Smart, formerly of Christchurch and now from Nelson, was third. The 53 competitors began with a 26km fell running leg, covered 6km in canoes, ran 13km up and over the Cobb Ridge and cycled for 60km to the finish at Kaiteriteri. The five women entrants were led home by Neroli Amyes, a distance runner, cyclist and canoeist from Nelson. Mai Clarborough, a National Parks ranger from St Arnaud who has experience of rock and mountain climbing and marathon running, was fifth over-ail and first veteran to finish. Colin Baas Real Estate, of Motueka, sponsored the event. Results:— Open: Sanders, 6:17.44, 1; Dennis, 6:19.35, 2; Smart, 6:19.48, 3; D. Strawbridge, 624.41,4; Clarborough, 6:34.3,5.
