Close eye on Lake Taupo
PA Wellington Seismologists plan to keep a close watch on the Lake Taupo area after the latest in a series of moderate earthquakes rocked the central North Island yesterday. A 2.8 p.m. shake, estimated at between 5.5 and 5.7 on the Richter scale, was felt in the Turangi and Tokaanu area.
A Seismological Observatory spokesman, Mr Murray Lowry, said the observatory had tentatively placed the centre of the tremor east of the southern end of Lake Taupo, at a “shallow” depth of up to 40km. This was the same spot as a 5.5 earthquake last month.
