Plane runs into birds

PA Dunedin The engine of a Boeing 737 was badly damaged yesterday when the plane ran into a flock of birds just after take-off from Dunedin Airport.

The 55 passengers on board Flight 996 to Christchurch, Palmerston North, and Auckland were about 200 metres in the air when they noticed a powerful stench of cooked birds.

The Boeing made a quick circuit as soon as the captain noticed something was wrong and landed safely. Captain B. J. ’ Gardner

said the plane ran into about 20 birds at 3.20 p.m., and when some were sucked into the engine he notice a slight vibration and a “putrid smell.”

An airport supervisor, Mr John Clent, said the birds were sucked into the engine through fans at the front. The fan blades were Liter found to be bent and twisted.

The damaged engine will be replaced today by one from Christchurch, and Mr Clent said the plane should be serviceable soon after noon.
