Englishmen struggling
NZPA-Reuter Karachi England’s cricketers endured another hot and miserable day in Karachi’s National Stadium as they struggled to avoid defeat in the first test against Pakistan.
At stumps on the third day, the touring team was 54 for two in its second innings, still 41 runs behind Pakistan’s respectable first innings total of 277.
England, bowled out for 182 in the first innings, lost its openers, Chris Smith and Mike Gatting, for just 21 runs before David Gower and Allan Lamb arrested the slide.
Both openers made quick returns to the pavilion after being bowled leg before by off-cutters from the medium-pacer, Sarfraz Nawaz. Gatting (4) was the first to go with just six runs
on the board and although Smith survived for 66 minutes, he contributed only five runs in that time. Earlier, Pakistan had taken its overnight score of 131 for five to 277 all out, thanks to a vital seventhwicket partnership of 75 from Salim Malik and Abdul Qadir. Qadir, who took five wickets for 74 in England’s first innings, made 40, while Salim hit a classic 74.
