Sire of LBJ returning to New Zealand
By
J. J. BOYLE
Godavari, sire of the brilliant Little Brown Jug, will be back in New Zealand for next covering season.
The English-bred son of Red God has been on lease to a stud in the Canberra district, and has sired 13 individual winners of 16 races from a total of 24 runners in Australia.
Mr Roger Swolf, who imported Godavari to stand in Canterbury, then leased him to an Australian stud be-
cause of a disappointing response from South Island broodmare owners, said yesterday he had hopes of leasing the horse to a New Zealand stud.
“There can hardly be another stallion in Australasia with Godavari’s record and percentages,” Mr Swolf said yesterday. “He got four to the track from his first crop as two-year-olds for four individual winners and two stakes winners, including Little Brown Jug. “Little Brown Jug, in his
second season, took top ranking by winning the Two Thousand Guineas, and got the Horse of the Year award.”
Mr Swolf said Godavari got not more than two mares in his second covering season, and two in his third, yet he had sired the winners Glydavari and Lord of the Dance.
Mr Swolf, and his wife, Ola, who plays an important part in the conduct of their small stud and their stable’s racing operations, will have their home-bred Indigod at
service next season. Indigod was Godavari’s first winner. He broke through for his win at Riccarton only about two weeks before Little Brown Jug’s first success. Indigod went on to establish himself as a sprinter of some class. He beat some speedsters at weight-for-age in the Timaru Stakes (1200 m as a five-year-old. His three wins last season included the Craven Plate at Riccarton and the Plaza Easter Purse at Riverton.
