Queen’s Pal looks bright hope at Orari today

By

W. R. CARSTON

Although Queen’s Pal has had to settle for minor platings in two of her last three races she is generally expected to give weight all round and a beating to her rivals in the Ross Smith Handicap at Orari today. The talented Riccartontrained mare will be going for her second victory at Orari and her third win this season in the second leg of the Geraldine Racing Club’s T.A.B. double.

Queen’s Pal began her four-year-old racing with a victory over today’s distance in the South Island Thoroughbred Stakes at Orari in September. Next time out she ran Every Show close in the Phar Lap Trophy on the same course in October.

Meantime, Queen’s Pal put another win on record, again at 1400 m at Riccarton early in December, and her other five starts have yielded three minor placings, the most recent being behind Gossip, Hint and McAngus on her home course last month.

The 10-horse field for the Ross Smith Handicap remained intact yesterday but scratchings have reduced the first leg, the Seadown Garage Handicap, to a fivehorse affair.

On paper the dual Westport winner, Julie’s Boy, stands out. But if the pace happens to be muddling, as so often happens with small fields in middle distance events, he might not find it so easy to come up with his third victory on the trot.

There was every indication in both of his winning runs at Westport that Julie’s Boy is at his best when the pace is really on all the way.
