Container volume up

Volume through the container terminal at the Port of Lyttelton was 34 per cent above budget for the month of January. This follows the first three months of the year beginning October last year, when volume was below budget The manager of the terminal, Mr W. A. Siddall, said the increase for January was due alnmost entirely to the introduction of the Japanese container service in December. The total ship exchange of containers for the month was 2937, compared with 2190 for the same period last year. Mr Siddall said the new Japanese trade amounted to 23 per cent of the. January volume.. The first two vessels on the trade, the Aotea and the Godwit, completed more than 300 container exchanges. Although January figure, have shown an increase, volume for the first four months of the year still remains below budget with 6891 containers exchanged compared with 8593 last year. Packing and unpacking of containers was 7 per cent below budget Mr Siddall said the upturn was expected to continue, “with indications that the figures for February should be well above budget’’ He said there had been little evidence of the expected upturn in the United Kingdom

and European trade, although there was a slight increase in the trade during January. ARRIVALS Moreton Bay (530 a.m.), 26376, Wellington (0.C.L.). Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Auckland (S.C.N.Z.).
