Organ fund gift
Sir,—lt was heartwarming to hear of Cr Garrett’s gesture in handing back to the city $lOOO, the equivalent of the amount voted towards her trip to China. Can we expect a similar gesture from the other councillors, without mentioning the Mayor and Town Clerk who surely have a deserving cause dear to their hearts.—Yours, etc.,
JOYCE SIMMONDS.’ March 2, 1984.
Sir,—l wait with bated breath for Cr Garrett’s next statement on her trip to China. It is a magnanimous gesture to give $lOOO to the Town Hall organ fund; but I still want my small portion of her $lOOO travel expenses withheld. Will Cr Garrett please inform me when she intends to return my share, as a ratepayer, of her trip’s expenses? I will let T. R. Loudon and other ratepayers ask for theirs separately.—Yours, etc., D. HERBERT. March 1, 1984.
Discrimination against women
Sir,—John and Gillian Canham (March 1) have been allowed to use your column for Christian propaganda. May I observe that if only Christians are recipients of Godgiven viewpoints, this amounts to a God of bias, discrimination and prejudice. Those who did not “invent” Christianity are frequently those who have the most to say about its alleged infallibility, ir-
respective of its contradictions; myths presented as facts; the cruelty of imposed sin on the newly-born and the discriminatory heaven to which only Christians will be permitted. All theology is the invention of man and all Christians are responsible for Christianity. One does not have to be a Christian to have a lasting happy marriage and it is pure propaganda for Christians to so imply. There are just as many failed Christian marriages as lasting ones, possibly more.—Yours, etc.,
ARTHUR MAY. March 2, 1984.
