ANDREW BERRYMAN, who coached the unbeaten New Zealand Maoris rugby league team in Britain late last year, died in Hamilton last Saturday. A popular figure, Mr Berryman toured Britain and France with the 195152 Kiwis and his long service to national Maori sides was emphasised by his appearances, more than a decade apart, against the 1949 Australians and the 1960 French tourists. He was also in the New Zealand Maori squad which travelled to Australia in 1956.

BARRY FORREST, of Timaru, will manage the New Zealand golf teams against Australia at St Clair on March 23 and 24. The senior teams will play for the Sloan Morpeth trophy, the junior teams for the Clare Higson trophy. Mr Forrest is the only South Island member of the three-man national selection panel. Robin Dailey, of Dannevirke, will be the manager of the New Zeaand team of four which will play Japan in Japan later this year. MARTIN KNIGHT, the Australian rugby centre of the late 19705, died in Sydney last week-end. Aged only 28, Knight had been suffering from leukaemia for almost four years. Knight came into the Australian side in 1978 and he was on the tour to New Zealand that year, playing in the first test at Wellington. The following year, he toured with the Wallabies to Argentina. Despite his illness Knight continued to coach rugby in. his Parramatta club for as long as he was able.

JOHN FLYNN, who skipped the winning Invercargill RSA four in the Canterbury Bowling Club’s $20,000 tournament recently, was once the most spectacular swimmer in his home province, at a time when Southland was well stocked with national aquatic champions. Flynn’s version of the front crawl could not be found in any swimming textbook, but his. natural strength and extraordinary fighting spirit brought him many successes in the 19505. He was New Zealand senior champion over 440 yd and 1650 yd in 1956, and also claimed five national intermediate freestyle titles, as well as holding all Southland records from 100 yd to one mile for long periods.
