Rent queries quadruple
The Christchurch Tenants’ Protection Association reported 18 alleged breaches of the rent freeze to the Housing Corporation last month. A spokesman, Mr Peter Jones, said yesterday that more might follow — the association was investigating several other tenant complaints. He said that the association had been “overwhelmed” with calls concerning the freeze this year, receiving four times the number it had had before Christmas. In February it had dealt with 110 inquiries on the subject compared with only 55 in the November-Decem-ber period, Mr Jones said. Of these, 72 had concerned breaches and proposed illegal rent increases. The rest had been calls for information. Mr Jones attributed the upsurge to a more cavalier attitude on the part of some
landlords, saying that they did not seem to care if they broke the law. He also said that tenants were more interested in
lodging formal complaints now that the corporation was seeking restitution of over-paid rent from landlords convicted of breaches.
