Forest combed for plane
PA Auckland A police party combed dense bush in the Hunua Ranges yesterday but failed to find any trace of a light plane which disappeared on Sunday carrying four Wanganui persons. A helicopter searching for the Wanganui Aero Club Piper Cherokee on Wednesday evening had found a heat spot with an infra-red camera. It was .thought that it might have emanated from the plane, which had been chartered for a flight from Wanganui to Ardmore, south of Auckland. A police spokesman said that four policemen, dropped into dense bush by helicopter, had searched an area in the north-west of the Hunuas for several hours but without success. He said that the heat reading had been near a dead tree. Those missing are the pilot, Miss Heather Armstrong, aged 22; Mr David Young, aged 38; Mr Graham Pratt, aged 32; and Mr John Lockett, aged 37. The heat reading came within hours of the Marine Helicopters machine joining the private search.
