Championship drivers
PA Auckland The country’s top trotting drivers, who are eligible to compete for the 1984 New Zealand Drivers’ Championship, have been named. The six leading drivers from each island, on premiership rankings, along with last year’s title winner, Colin de Filippi, and current World Driving champion, Robert Cameron, will drive in four penalty-free championship races at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting oh Tuesday, March 20.
Another four races will be run at the New Brighton fixture at Addington the follow-
ing night. The North Island drivers, with their current tally of wins for the 1983-84 season, are: Peter Wolfenden (57), Own Purdon (39), Tony Herlihy (36), Maurice McKendry (21),-Colin Butler (19), and Graeme Harris (19). Garry Hillier (18) is the reserve. The South Island drivers are: Peter Jones (35), Richard Brosnan (33), Kerry O’Reilly (28), Jack Smolensk! (27), Mike de Filippi (24), and Robin Butt (22). The emergency is Jack Carmichael. Colin de Filippi has 52 wins, while Cameron has 13.
