Ford Telstar best seller
Porirua-based Todd Motors regained No. 1 position in the New Zealand car market in January gaining 19.9 per cent of a total market of 6951 new car sales.
Ford, with 18.6 per cent,, was next and then came NZMC with 12 per cent. Ford’s Japanese-origin Telstar was the best-seiling model for the month, 602 cars being registered. The Honda Accord (503) and Mit-
subishi Sigma (492) were next on the sales ladder.
Toyota’s market share was 11.3 per cent and it was followed by General Motors (10.9 per cent) in fifth place. Then came Nissan (9.5 per cent), Mazda (8.7), Motor Holdings (2.6), Daihatsu (1.6), Suzuki (0.8) and the others (4-1).
Following the Ford Telstar, the Honda Accord and Mitsubishi Sigma, the other
top-selling models were the Holden Commodore and Ford Laser (451 each), Mitsubishi Mirage (441), Mazda 323 (368), Toyota Corolla (335), Mitsubishi Tredia (281) and Nissan Pulsar (274). A 2.17 per cent drop in British car sales in January, compared with January 1983, was attributed to the severe weather conditions experienced in central and northern England during the month. In all, 161,844 cars
were sold and Ford retained the largest segment of the market with a 28.10 per cent share. Ford’s Escort (16,577) topped the list and it was followed by the Vauxhall Cavalier (13,720), Ford Sierra (11,932), Austin/MG Metro (11,115), Ford Fiesta (10,110), Austin/MG Maestro (8698), Vauxhall Astra (6149), Vauxhall Nova (5716), Volvo 300 Series (3794) and Volkswagen Polo (3788).
