Antarctic coal value doubtful

PA Wellington Coal seams sampled in a recent Antarctic geological survey are of doubtful economic value. Heat generated by surrounding volcanic rock had “coked” the coal, driving off most of the useful components, analysts at the Coal Research Association in Wellington found. A joint team of four from the New Zealand Geological Survey and the New South Wales Antarctic coal measures study group took the samples during a visit last summer. One team member, Mr Stephen Edbrooke, of the Geological Survey at Ruakura, Hamilton, said the samples were taken from coal outcrops near the group’s field camps in the Fleming and Shapeless Mountain areas. No drilling was done on the trip, which was part of a five-year research programme. The seams were not very thick and the coal had a high ash content, he said.
