N.Z. Party and Soviet Union

Sir,—As I respect and wish for policies from a government which emphasises the importance of the individual and his right to the determination of his own future, I am becoming increasingly confused about the policies of the New Zealand Party. As much as I admire its approach to what has become a very socialist-orientated society under the National Party, I am deeply disturbed by the new

party’s apparent willingness to establish close ties with the Soviet Union, which is, and has for some time been, the antithesis of everything a person who believes in liberty could hope for. What is the point of freeing ourselves internally, only to embrace slavery openly on an international level? We should all be wary of giving our vote to anyone who makes New Zealand’s liberty a secondary issue. — Yours, etc. JOHN HARRIS. February 25, 1984.
