A surprisingly large number of people correctly named the six faces of film stars in last weeks “Big Chill” competition which, I must admit, was a difficult one.

The six names required by identifying stars from photos taken from their school yearbooks were: Paul Newman, Woody Allen, Dustin Hoffman, Dolly Parton, Mary Tyler Moore and Robin Williams.

Of course, many other names were submitted, some of them understandable, and others quite amazing. A large number of people picked the photo of Newman as one of Richard Dreyfus; while more people thought the second picture to be Robert Mitchum instead of Allen; and others believed Williams to be either George C. Scott, Rod Taylor, Kirk Douglas or Charlton Heston.

The picture that proved to be the hardest was that of Dolly Parton, with people taking her as Phyllis Diller, Meryl Streep, Connie Francis, Penny Marshall, Goldie Hawn, Sandra Dee, Joan Blondell, Anne Baxter, Mae West, Angie Dickinson, AnnMargaret, Jessica Lange, Marilyn Monroe, Debbie Reynolds, Donna Reed, Stephanie Powers, Julie Walters, Julie Newmar, Olivia de Havilland, Ethel Merman, Shirley Jones,

Judy Holiday and Diane Cilento. It may be argued that Dolly Parton is more of a country singer than a film star, however, she has already appeared in two successful films, “Nine to Five” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” The same may apply to Robin Williams, better known as Mork from Ork, but who has starred in “Popeye” and “The World According to Garp,” which has yet to be seen in Christchurch. The winners of doublepass tickets to see “The Big Chill,” the Academy Awardnominated comedy-drama which will start at the Westend tomorrow week, were chosen from the first 10 correct, properly-spelled entries. They are: Brenda Nagle, A. Smith, Mrs Ann Gregory, Suzanne Wills, J. Raymer,

Thos R. Roberts, Catherine Gee and Mrs Barbara Clements, all' of Christchurch; R. Thomson, of Darfield, and Lynn Johnson, of Kaiapoi. In last week’s article, I inadvertently asked for the names of five instead of six stars to be submitted, which might have confused some contestants. One of these seemed to be Kathryn D.Moor, of Christchurch, who sent in only five correct names. She will also receive a double pass. Also very confused was Brian Butters, of Christchurch, who said: “What a devilishly cunning competition you are running in ‘The Press’ today. You had me momentarily baffled when you asked for five film stars to be identified from the six photos shown. ‘Was one of the photos not a film star?’ I asked myself. Then I realised that none were of ‘film stars* but of stars who had appeared on film. My answers to your crafty quiz are: 1. Pope John-Paul; 2. Margaret Thatcher (in drag); 3. Ayatollah Khomeiny; 4. Mrs Gandhi (photo over-exposed); 5. The Queen Mother, 6. Merv Wellington.”

The 12 winners named above of double-pass tickets to see “The Big Chill” may collect them at the Westend from next week onwards by presentation of identification and full address
