Lambs’ wool was generally 2.5 per cent dearer at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday compared with the Dunedin sale on Friday, according to the official report. The report was issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the New Zealand Council of Wool Exporters. Halfbred fleece was quoted as being to 2.5 per cent cheaper, Halfbred lambs’ wool was 2.5 per cent dearer, crossbred fleece was in sellers’ favour, and crossbred lambs’ was described as erratic but generally 2.5 per cent dearer. Crossbred second shear was also in sellers’ favour, crossbred, soft cotts were 2.5 to 5 per cent cheaper, crossbred skirtings were up to 2.5 per cent cheaper, and poor style crossbred oddments were 5 to 7.5 per cent cheaper. The offering for the first day consisted of 21,962 bales drawn from the Canterbury Plains, Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast. Very few of the fleece wools were attractive and many were of reasonable colour but low yielding. Others showed discolouration and were cotted to varying degrees.. Lambs’ wool was ! in abundance in all qualities, styles and lengths. The total offering was divided into: 1 percent Merino; 24 per cent Halfbred; 15 per cent crossbred; 18 per cent cotts; 8 per cent second shear, 22 per cent lambs; 12 per cent skirtings; 10 per cent oddments. Eastern Europe were the principal buyers with support coming from the Far East, Western Europe and local mills. The New Zealand Wool Board was not required to support the market.
