Mercenaries freed
NZPA-AP London Seven British mercenaries, captured in Angola’s civil war eight years ago, flew home yesterday after their surprise release by the Marxist regime in . Luanda. But they returned to Britain the same way they left in 1976 — saying nothing. The Angolans freed them on Tuesday as an act of
clemency after years of diplomatic effort by Britain. The mercenaries were jailed in 1976, sentences ranging from 16 to 30 years, by an Angolan military tribunal. Four others, including their leader, a former paratroop sergeant, Costas Giorgiou, known as “Colonel Callan,” and an American, Daniel Gearhart, were executed in Angola for “war crimes."
