Violence toll put at 60
NZPA-AFP Nigeria The death toll from religious violence in Jimeta, outside Yola, capital of Nigeria’s north-eastern Gongola state, has risen to 60, the News Agency of Nigeria reports, quoting a Yola hospital source. The report said that 57 of the victims either had been macheted to death, or had axe or sword cuts on them, while the three others had gunshot wounds. It also said that about 50 injured victims had been admitted.
The casualty figure could be higher, because it was reported that some of the corpses littering the streets had still to be taken to the hospitals. Several wounded victims were also said to have gone away to treat themselves.
