End to sewage smell?
The Christchurch Drainage Board has approved the purchase of. equipment which it says will end the foul smell of effluent from the Bromley sewage-treat-ment works. The board agreed last
evening to buy a wet oxidation plant, estimated to cost $1.25 million. This was recommended by a board committee last month. The treatment system for a malodorous trickling filter at the plant could be working in 18 months. Further experiments were needed on the system’s design but the board’s chief engineer, Mr H. P. Hunt,
said its purchase was warranted. The smell-solving system will include a permanent cover over one of the plant’s filters, which will replace a bright blue cover installed in November. The raising of a loan for the equipment will be considered by the board’s finance committee later this month.
