Limes Room night club

The Limes Room at the Christchurch Town Hall will be an up-market night club from Saturday. For 12 nights during March 3-17 the Limes Room will be the venue for the Christchurch Festival cabaret. A stage, sound system and lighting have been especially fitted for the cabaret season.

A four-piece resident band will play each evening with a special theme such as swing, jazz or big-band, with a different guest artist each night. The band is made up of Tom and Paul Rainee, Jonathon Taberner and Eric Jackson. The band will play from 9.30 p.m. to 11 p.m. when the evening’s guest performer will appear. Eight guest artists will perform on various nights. Polyphony, an Australian comic vocal group, will begin the season on March 3 and 4. The group has performed at 200 cabaret shows in the last nine months in Australia. This is its first trip to Christchurch. New Zealand's international jazz pianist, Mike Nock, will give two cabaret appearances to end the season on March 16 and 17.

Another jazz artist to feature in the cabaret will be Malcolm McNeill who is returning to Christchurch for the festival. The singer’s two appearances on March 10 and 11 will be his only festival performances. Stiff Glue specialises in satirical songs and offensive behaviour. Three performers and a pianist send up everything from Merivale mothers to modern music. They will share their March 7 and 14 appearances with Steve Thomas, a Welsh-born entertainer. Mr Thomas has been in New Zealand since 1975 and

The aggressive, energetic duo will perform on March 15. River is an American mime artist, clown and fireeater. Trained in London, the entertainer, also known as Michael Lynch, now lives in Nelson and seldom performs in public. His appearances are on March 8 and 9. Limited door sales to the cabaret will be available each evening.
