Russian crew change
The arrival of a Russian passenger vessel at the Port of Lyttelton this week signals yet another crew change for Soviet fishing vessels working in nearby waters.
The 3923-ton Antonina Nedzdanova arrived at Lyttelton on Tuesday bringing with her a complete crew change for the fishing vessel Svet Laya. The crew change involves the exchange of about 85 crew members, one of the smallest numbers to be brought aboard a passenger vessel from the Soviet Union. Crew changes in the past have involved crews from up to three vessels numbering more than 200. With such a small number of passengers, the ratio of crew to passengers aboard the Antonina Nedzdanova is almost one to one. The vessel carries a permanent crew of about 80. The Antonina Nedzdanova transports fishing crews to their destinations throughout the Pacific, servicing the Soviet Union’s southern fishing fleet She also carries Russian passengers on tours. The vessel is due to leave for her 18-day return voyage to the colder climate of Vladivostok late this afternoon. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Dunedin (S.C.N.Z.).
