Wide Aust. falls
NZrA syoney Australian share markets opened weaker and kept falling yesterday due to soft metal firices and concern at rising ocal and United States interest rates. Brokers said a drop in copper, nickel and gold prices in London sparked European selling which was matched by further selling orders after the Wall Street Dow Jones industrial average collapsed amid fears that the United States budget deficit may rise. The Australian all ordinaries index was down 10.3 points at 737.5 with the all industrials losing 7.3 to 974.2 and the all resources off 12.6 at 549.9. Metal prices were marked down with CRA among the major losers, dropping 20c to 532 c. After closure CRA reported an annual equityaccounted profit of sAust7l.63M. BHP fell 25c to 1335 c, while its would-be major shareholder, Bell Resources, jumped 20c in Melbourne to 880 c.
