Witiora report

The latest drilling report on the Witiora 1 oil exploration well off Taranaki is a disappointment. The Mokau formation bad been penetrated as expected at a depth of 2590 m but had been found to consist of poor quality reservoir sandstones with no shows of hydrocarbons, Stewart Petroleum Company, Ltd, reported yesterday. Drilling was continuing in a 12*'4 inch hole, now 2676 m below the rig floor, said Stewart Petroleum, the oeprator for the consortium involved in Witiora 1. In the last week, 1640 m of new hole had been drilled. The main Kapuni sandstone target, at 3830 m, is expected to be reached after two more weeks of drilling. The Kapuni is the main target in this well, as it has been in two other wells in the current drilling programme of Taranaki. However, some interest has been focused on the Mokau formation since partners in licence area 38114 achieved an oil flow in their Moki 1 well from that structure. Stewart Petroleum, which is a subsidiary of New Zealand Oil and Gas, Ltd, has a 35 per cent interest in Witiora 1.
