‘A chance, perhaps, for N.Z. lamburgers’

PA Auckland The growing popularity of convenience foods among Japanese gives New Zealand a chance to push lamburger sales, the Japanese Ambassador to New Zealand, Mr Teruji Akiyama, has said.

He told the Japan Society of Auckland that changes in the Japanese life-style presented New Zealand exporters with new opportunities. Mr Akiyama said fish consumption had declined in line with a slow-down in the Japanese fishing industry. “On the other hand, the consumption of animal protein has increased and is continuing to do so.” He said New Zealand producers should take note of a trend towards pre-prepared meals, convenience foods, eating out, and the emphasis many placed on health foods. “With more wives working and the opportunities for leisure pursuits, Japanese families are attracted to. the easier and quicker ways to prepare meals which supermarket pre-prepared foods offer,” he said.

“A chance here, perhaps, for New Zealand lamburgers.”
