Prices less buoyant at adult-ewe sale

Another big yarding of 13,000 adult ewes faced buyers at the Addington market yesterday. The yarding carried the total number of aged and annual draft ewes sold at Addington during the last four store sheep sales to more than 60,000. Yesterday’s sale was the first time this season that the adult store sheep market lacked buoyancy, although prices were still satisfactory. Many farmers have already bought their additional stock and the recent hot weather has allowed other farmers to continue harvesting grain crops. Several good quality lines of annual draft Romney ewes from Banks Peninsula were offered and these were in steady demand, making to $25. However the buying power slackened for sheep of mediocre quality. Competition from freezing companies kept the value of works-type ewes up to recent rates. An average quality yarding of two-tooths attracted a medium level of interest. Good Border cross sheep sold to 132.20, and a line of Corriedales made to $3l. A few pens of Romney twotooths sold to $27, but most other fine and strong wool two-tooths sold from $2l to $26. Once again there was a shortage of store lambs which forced prices up. The yarding comprised mostly medium lambs which sold from $l7 to $2O. Few sales were made at less than $l4. The yardings were 13,163 adults (16,000 last week), 3597 two-tooths, and 4965 lambs (3300 last week). Sales included:— Adults: Glenroy Farm (Hororata), 292 mixed age Coopworths at $25.20; D. L.
