The traditional music of Japan will receive a rare performance in Christchurch on Sunday. The Hanami Ensemble, consisting of Miki Sato. Maureen Heffernan. Judith Exley and Jonathan Crawford. will perform on the koto, shakuhachi and shamisen. The founder of the ensemble. Jonathan Crawford, is a Wellington lawyer whose professional involvement with Japanese companies led him to studv Japanese
language and culture.. On brief visits to Japan in 1983 and 1982 he received kc-m lessons. Miki Sato is a teacher ci koto and plays the shamisen. She will return to Japan this month after two years in Wellington. Judith Exley is a Wellington flute teacher who has had a long standing m shakuhachi and spent seven weeks in Tokyo in 1952 receiving lessons from Tckuyama Sensei. Maureen Heffernan
