An exhibition of art by leading American. Australian. British and New Zealand artists will open at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery on March 6 to mark the Christchurch r estival. The title of the exhibition is Paperchase and it features a diverse range of works created both on and with paper. The exhibition is divided into six sections. The first is a historical collection of 37 drawings by Henry Fuseli, from the years 1764-1821 with subjects drawn from classical literature. German romantic literature and the Bible. who worked at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Les Angeles, in" 1983. The Australian contribution to Papercitase is represented in an installation of works entitled "Jabberwock. - Organised by Timothy Payne director of the Jabberwock Paper Mill in Tasmania, the installation presents paperworks by eight leading Australian artists. Working at the paper milk the artists have explored the possibilities of handmade paper as an art form.

On the invitation of the gallery. Alan Pearson, a British artist, who lived in New Zealand between 19571980. has contributed a set of 15 drawings and oil paintings on paper. Entitled “Variations on the Tneatre. - tbese deal with images of the opera.

Three sculptors and four painters have prepared works for the New' Zealand artists' section of the exhibition. Paperworks by Bing Dawe and Neil Dawson will hang in the centre court. Terry Stringer has an installation entitled “Domestic Details- and Michael Reed has one called “Interior Motive - and another called “Concertina in Position. - Recent pieces by Ralph Hotere. Don Peebles and Phillip Trusttum are also included in this section.

All works, with the exception of the Henry Fuseli drawings and David Hockney prints, will be available for sale. The exhibition will run until April 22.
