Singing scholarship
New Zealand has been divided into three regions for this year’s Dame Sister Mary Leo singing scholarship. There will be preliminary rounds in the northern, central and southern regions, held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The scholarship, now worth $15,000, entitles the winner to a year of advanced study with an ap-
proved teacher. The runnerup receives $5OO and the right to enter the Marianne Mathy scholarship in Sydney. The final will be held in Auckland on April 16, when six finalists will compete. Entrants must be under 26 as at June 23, 1984, and entries close on March 1. Based on population the 12 semi-finalists to compete in Auckland will be selected
as follows: five from the northern region, three from the central and southern regions; and one from Australia. The scholarship, sponsored by the Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury Trustee Savings Banks, is named after Dame Sister Mary Leo, one of this country’s best-known singing teachers.
