Benefits from gold recovery
Sir,—Recently I saw a gold screen on its way to the West Coast. As a pioneer of this form of gold recovery I wondered how many had been employed in its manufacture and delivery. Starting with the ironsand, through the steel mill, the shipping or railage to the South Island gave work to workers in the steel works, the railways, seamen and watersiders. The manufacture gave work to designers and fabrication staff. The welding supplies, the motors and hydraulic drives, the chain drives and paint represented money for the finally the trans-
port firm and driver shared a little. Workers will be engaged to run the machine and gold recovered will help our overseas exchange. I felt proud to be able to compare this with the giant weta or the bush snail our conservation friends offer as an alternative.— Yours, etc.,
W. D. BLACKADDER, Springs Junction. February 27, 1984.
