1983 “Sportsman of the Year”

Kerry Hammond, the nominee of the Eastern Suburbs club, was a popular winner of the 1983 Canterbury rugby league schoolboy “Sportsman of the Year” award. The annual competition for the Archie Stuart Trophy is open to players between the ages of 13 and 16 years. A selection committee receives recommen-

dations from clubs, watches the players in action, and interviews each nominee. After making his debut in the eight-years grade, Hammond has impressed with his dedication, consistency and knowledge of the sport as he has progressed through to the 16-years division. When Eastern was unable to field a team in his age group last winter, Hammond was enthusiastic enough to travel to Halswell each week-end for his football. Hammond also played rugby league for Aranui High School. A Canterbury representative, Peter Beck, was selected as the recipient of the Desmond-Lipscombe Trophy as the New Zealand “Sportsman of the Year” after the national 15-years tournament at Rotorua. Beck, from Hornby, captained Canterbury and Southern Zone and was chosen in the schoolboy Kiwi team.
