SIDELINES
THANKS TO the generosity of Adidas, the Canterbury rugby team will be looking very smart when it heads off next month on its tour to Singapore and Hong Kong. Last week each member of the team (and there will be 27 players on the trip) received a set of shirts and slacks. At the same time, M. O’Brien and Company, which holds the Adidas footwear franchise, gave each member a pair of boots and also a pair of leisure shoes. The boots, which are of a new design, are appropriately enough red and black in colour, although according to a spokesman of the company they might be marketed elsewhere as being black and red.
NOT MANY CRICKETERS have entered senior ranks at the mature age of 43, but Bob Cusdin of Lancaster Park has given no hint of age in his performances this season. He came into the side for the sixth game. A big man, and a robust stroke-maker, Cusdin used to play for the Technical Old Boys Club. When Technical amalgamated with Lancaster Park Cusdin made his mark in the lower grades. He fields well, too. In senior championship matches, he has batted five times, for very useful scores of 36, 29, 19, 37 and 50. He has also acquitted himself well in limite-over fixtures. Cusdin may be older than most in his team, but no doubt he shows proper respect for Bruce Irving, aged 51.
THE MOST significant sponsorship to be received by an amateur boxing club in Christchurch was announced this week. Monier Tile (N.Z.), Ltd, is to assist Barry’s Boxing Gymnasium for a four-figure amount. The gymnasium has regularly been the most successful in Christchurch in recent years, and has gained further lustre from the deeds of its trainer, Kevin Barry, sen., and Commonwealth light heavyweight champion, Kevin Barry, jun., at international level.
