Former All Black Yaldhurst candidate for National Party

A Christchurch lawyer and former All Black, Mr Howard Joseph, will be the National Party candidate for Yaldhurst this year. Mr Joseph, who is 34, was selected on the first ballot from two other candidates, Mr Peter Fraemohs, a company director, and Mr David Watson, a farm adviser. Mrs Margaret Austin, the senior mistress at Riccarton High School, will be the Labour Party candidate. Her selection followed the decision of the sitting member, Mr M. A. Connelly, to retire at the end of the term. Mr Neil Russell will be the New Zealand Party candidate. Social Credit and the Values Party have not named candidates yet. National’s candidate in 1981 was Mrs Margaret Murray, who is now the party’s women’s vice-presi-dent. She did not seek reelection because of her work-load as chairman of the Waimairi District Council. Mr Joseph has degrees in

law and political science and was a newspaper and broadcasting journalist. He practises law in Christchurch and in 1971 played for the All Blacks in tests 1 against the British Lions. He describes Yaldhurst as a “fascinating” seat to contest and believes it is not beyond the grasp of the National Party.

“Yaldhurst is so varied and diverse. It is really a composite of the urban and rural, the affluent middle class and blue collar worker, the superannuitant and school-leaver. “The only consistent feature really has been the presence of Mick Connelly, but he has now stepped down,” Mr Joseph said. He believes Mr Connelly’s retirement could well disturb past voting trends and make the vote more volatile. “The real issue is whether the Labour candidate is seen to be good enough to fill Mr Connelly’s shoes,” Mr Joseph said. “It really comes back to who is going to best represent Yaldhurst — and we will be trying.” Boundary changes announced last year make Yaldhurst an even safer seat for Labour on paper. Mr Connelly had a majority of almost 2000 votes after the 1981 election.
