Vessel’s first visit

The Shipping Corporation of - New Zealand’s newest container vessel, the New Zealand Trader, made her first call at the Port of Lyttelton on Monday. Her visit marks the first of what will become a regular service through Lyttelton on the corporation’s Tasman run. The 8500-ton vessel will join the Darwin Trader, owned by the Australia National Line, on the service calling at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Sydney, and Melbourne every 21 days. The New Zealand Trader was bought by the corporation last October and heralds the state-owned corporation’s first direct entry into the Tasman trade. The vessel was built in Taiwan three years ago and traded between Japan and the West Coast of North America for the Israeli-owned Zim Lines. She is fully containerised and can carry about 300 containers. A spokesman for the Shipping Corporation said the ship was introduced to the service as the corporation decided it was a “logical time” for its presence to be felt on the Tasman run, due to C.E.R. and the recent growth in trade between Australia and New Zealand. Tne entry of an additional vessel had cut the service’s turn-around time from 21 days to 10 days, he said. The New Zealand Trader’s inaugural sailing has not been smooth, however. She was held up in Auckland for several weeks due to a manning dispute by the Cooks and Stewards Union and the Institute of Marine and Power Engineers. The vessel was originally expected to call at Lyttelton on February 10. ARRIVALS Antonina Nedzdanova, (7.30 a.m.), 3923, U.S.S.R. (Scales.).
