U.S. beef farmers face hard year
PA Wellington New Zealand can expect more calls for restrictions on imports of beef to the United States during the coming year, said the presidenUbf the United States National Cattlemen’s Association, Mr John Weber. The beef industry in the United States faced a critical year and members of his association had been alerted to problems never encountered before, said Mr Weber. The result of increased downward pressure on beef prices was likely to be an increase in protectionism. “Our members look at the
price of beef and they try to blame everything else and put pressure on us for fewer imports,” he said. “I think you will see our cattle people more out front this year. “We have a real problem with import laws in our country and I think other countries are protective too.” Mr Weber was leader of a group of 30 American beef producers who had attended an annual conference between Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand beef industry representatives on beef trade problems in Wellington.
