US car sales
United States car manufacturers say their sales in midFebruary increased 73 per cent, or nearly 100,000 vehicles, above the previous year’s sales, and this is the period’s second best showing ever.
Auto analysts and company officials say the surge in carbuying since the start of 1984 continues to defy their expectations and could only be attributed to demand stemming from economic recovery and optimistic consumers. The big three companies — General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler — all recorded big gains over comparable 1983 figures. Chrysler car sales were up 85 per cent; GM, 76 per cent; Ford, almost 65 per cent.
