C.N.G. conversion target ‘achievable’

PA Rotorua An average of about 2000 vehicles a month would be switching to C.N.G. by next year, a gas conference in Rotorua was told. Presenting a paper on the big gas projects, the director of gas development for the Ministry of Energy, Mr Vernon Dark, said that in spite of projections to the contrary, the 1990 target of 2000,000 vehicles conversions would be reached. In a table set out in his paper the estimated conversions by the target date were 168-272.

However, Mr Dark said the figures were only statistical projections. The target was still achievable, as was a reviewed target of 220,000 by 1995. To achieve this, he said, the Government had provided incentives in the form of grants and loans worth about $39 million.

Over the same period, the foreign exchange savings, should the targets be met, would be almost $BOO million. In Mr Dark’s table the number of conversions is expected to reach a peak of about 25,000 next year.
