Costs up $100,000 for Cam River scheme
The Cam River improvement scheme will cost about $lOO,OOO more than first estimated, the North Canterbury Catchment Board’s operations committee has been told.
Although work on the scheme, which began in October, had gone well, the section below the northern motorway had gone over budget, said the board’s operations manager, Mr B. P. Dwyer.
Some 15km of the Cam River system is being rebuilt as part of a $1.37 million flood-relief scheme for the Cam and Cust rivers. Funds for the scheme have come from the Government, the board, and the
Rangiora District Council and Rangiora Borough Council. A meeting to discuss further finance will be held. Youngs bridge, which spans the Cam River on Revells Road, will not be relocated further upstream. The board had earlier investigated moving the bridge to improve river alignment. It did not consider the benefits warranted the cost of $145,000. Instead it will improve the channel to the design standard of the river improvement scheme, at a cost of $BOOO. Erosion control Three farmholders in the board’s district have been
granted funds for soil conservation work. Mr T. Childs of Manuka Bay, between the Hurunui river mouth and Gore Bay, has been granted $11,584. About 52ha of native bushcovered coastal land on Mr Child’s property has been made into a scenic reserve. A protection fence is being built round the bush-slopes to prevent stock access, and a walkway is being constructed. Grants of $8394 and $12,504 were made to Pahau Reserve, Culverden and Spring Terrace, near Cheviot respectively. The grants are valued at 60 per cent of the estimated costs of erosion-control work.
