Sheep measles is displacing hydatids
PA Wellington Sheeps measles is now taking over from hydatids as the big concern of the National Hydatids Council. The council chairman, Mr T. McCristell, said a new approach was needed to ensure that sheep measles, which is harmless but causes disfiguring cysts in sheep, did not become a serious marketing problem. The increased incidence of sheep measles indicated that dog owners did not take sufficient precautions to prevent the animals from becoming infected. Mr McCristell said that
the council’s programme had reduced human hydatids to the point where further reduction in its incidence could be achieved by an increasingly selective six-weekly dosing regime.
