Drainage area move rejected
The Hurunui County Council’s proposal to constitute the whole of the county a drainage district was overwhelmingly defeated when the votes of a postal poll were counted on Saturday.
Sixty-four per cent of those qualified voted. A total of 359 voted for a drainage district, while 988 voted against. There are still 13 special votes to be counted, but they will have no effect on the outcome of the poll.
A poll was held on the proposal after the council
received a petition signee by 525 ratepayers opposing the confirmation of the county as a land drainage area. Had the poll been carried, the council would have been able to do land drainage work within its district and that included the right to go on to private property to construct. The council decided to constitute the drainage district after many years of legal battles after Mr E. J. Upritchard would not allow the council access on to his farm to do work on the Amberley drainage scheme.
