Asuncion erupts

Crowds in the Paraguayan capital of Asuncion went mad with delight in the streets after news of their tennis team’s victory over New Zealand in the Davis Cup tie at Wilding Park filtered through.

“It’s one o’clock in the morning in Asuncion and the people are dancing in the street, letting off firecrackers, and getting drunk,” said a jubilant Francisco Gonzalez after he and Victor Pecci had clinched the tie for Paraguay by beating New Zealand’s Chris Lewis and Russell Simpson in the doubles on Saturday.

A delighted Alberto Gross Brown, the team’s captain, telephoned the president of Paraguay, Alfredo Stroessner, to give him the glad tidings at first hand. The president responded by saying the matches had been seen on television and everybody was “very happy.”

However, the Paraguayans have a tough assignment looming in their quar-ter-final match against last year’s cup runner-up, Sweden, in Sweden in July.

Asked what the team’s chances of success were in this tie, Gonzalez replied: “Have you ever tried to stop a tank?”
