IMAGINATIVE MATHEMATICIAN AN UNUSUAL and highly interesting career opportunity occurs for two exceptionally talented mathematicians, in a recently established company in Nelson. The minimum qualification is a good honours degree and a person who has done some original work would be preferred. Our U.K. company Is engaged in trading in a number of international markets and has already spent a number of years analysing relevant data, searching for recurring patterns which can be described arithmetically. Successful Identification of such recurring patterns is highly profitable in this very commercial activity, which means that we can afford to remunerate productive researchers exceedingly well. Success in this area is not easy and it presents a stimulating challenge because classical statistical techniques are impotent, except as minor tools, due to variations in period and amplitude of the patterns which exist. The researcher has to develop his/her own techniques. Of very particular Interest to us would be a person with a real interest in and knowledge of physics, from cosmology to atomic structure, as we also have some extraordinary hypotheses which we are intending to test, and for which we will require a talented mathematician to evolve the mathematical descriptions so that the experimental predictions may be quantified. All of the work to be done is in “untrodden territory.” Existing text books and napers are therefore only of help in evolving techniques, and successful persons require to be not only talented, but also to have a certain type of mental characterisation: It should be one ofinnate curiosity. It should, of habit, tend not to accept an idea simply because It is part of the conventional wisdom, but to question anything untU ite own logic is satisfied. It should be highly imaginative. Its thinking processes should tend to be lateral as easily as vertical. It should enjoy solving problems for the problem’s sake.
