Record entry for N.Z. rowing
Even after deleting five events from the programme for the New Zealand rowing championships which begin at Lake Karapiro today the organisers are faced with a huge record entry of 902 crews. Over the six days of the regetta officials will have to get through 174 heats, 164 repechages, 32 quarter-finals, 58 semi-finals, and then the 41 finals. The most popular event of the 41 on the programme is the intermediate single sculls, which has attracted 76 crews, compared with 50 at Lake Horowhenua in 1983. Just to get through to the quarterfinal stage will require 16 heats and 16 repechages. Not
far behind in numbers is the intermediate coxed fours, which has 72 entries, 28 more than last year. In recent years the total entry of 902 compares with only 688 in 1979 (Lake Waihola), 832 in 1980 (Lake Horowhenua), 784 in 1981 (Lake Karapiro), 673 in 1982 (Waihola again), and 824 in 1984 (Horowhenua). Waikato and North shore are expected to dominate the premier men’s events, but Avon will also be a strong contender for a title or two. Canterbury has a good chance .of winning the premier women’s eight-oared title and that club’s premier lightweights will also be to the fore.
