Private growers to provide plants
Parliamentary reporter Private nurserymen have been promised that they will supply the bulk of the material needed for the Government’s “Beautiful New Zealand” projects. The Minister of Works, Mr Friedlander, said it had always been the Government’s intention that the projects rely mainly on private nurseries to supply the bulk of the plants.
There was no intention to expand the limited and specialised Ministry of
Works nursery system to meet the increased demand for young plants created by the scheme.
Mr Friedlander was looking at the role of the Ministry’s nurseries to see if the greater part of their activities could not be transferred to the private sector.
During the 1983 planting season, more than 70 per cent of the plants used for “Beautiful New Zealand” projects had been produced by private nurseries.
