Renaults popular

Renault, No. 5 on the world’s car and commercial vehicle ranking list in 1982, was the best selling imported completely built-up car in New Zealand last year.

According to Post Office registration figures, 476 Renaults were registered here last year. That was a 183 per cent increase on the 165 cars registered the previous year.

The rise in Renault popularity was attributed to demand for the Feugo coupe (above) and the R2O and RlB saloons, according to the Auckland-based Eurotrans Motors, Sold either in 1.6-litre GTS or 2-litre GTX versions, the Fuego has become the most popular completely built-up coupe sold in New Zealand, at $25,200 and $27,250 respectively. Following Renault in registrations came BMW (277), Volvo (236), Mercedes Benz (199), Fiat (179), and Audi (174). Last year, total passenger car registrations, including previously registered cars from overseas, declined by 11.3 per cent, but registrations of completely built-up cars rose by 7.6 per cent to 2131 units.
